aa_counter.py — pre- and post-increment and decrement in python

But it has its limits, and short of forking a new version of Python for myself, sometimes it is just best to implement some kind of work-around. In this case, for pre- and post increment and decrement operations on counters, which Python regrettably lacks.

SCOTUS empowers another ex post facto law

rippedThe Supreme Court ruled on May 17th, 2010, that federal officials can indefinitely hold inmates after their prison terms are complete. The high court in a 7-2 judgment reversed a lower court decision that said Congress overstepped its authority.

Ex post facto laws are explicitly forbidden to the federal government and the states by two separate and quite specific clauses in the constitution, the government’s authorizing document:

The federal government: “Section 9 – Limits on Congress – No … ex post facto Law shall be passed.”

The states: “Section 10 – Powers prohibited of States – No State shall … pass any … ex post facto Law”

You may be asking, “What is an ex post facto law?” The legal definition is given by Calder v Bull (3 US 386 [1798]), in the opinion of Justice Chase, which defines four ways laws must fail as ex being post facto:

On Image Post-Processing for Enhancement

There exists a fairly vocal group of people who would tell us that a picture should be an exact representation of what you would see, as a human, had you only been there to see it. At least, as best as can be managed; that’s the goal. I find this to be only one very limited way to look at the world with tools of higher resolution and capability than my own. My own approach is… other.

Mmmmmf.

Well, time for a blog. I kept telling myself I was going to write blog software, because I kept hearing about how this blog engine or that blog engine had been hacked, but I never got around to it. Of course, if I keep that cycle going, there will be no blog.

So, if I ever do get around to it, I’ll just move these posts. I probably won’t, though. :-)
