4.16.7 - Scanning

SCN indicates scanning is available when green. Pressing it will add LEDs to the F1 ... F10 buttons. An F-memory that is on will be included in the scan. For a memory to scan through, the channel must be squelched. If squelch is broken, the scan will stop. Scanning will not resume until either the channel squelches again, or you disable the memory by clicking on it.

When scanning, You may want to set the metering system to peak mode ( PEK illuminated) as this increases the frequency response of the AGC system, which in turn helps the scanning engine to detect and stop on signals before scanning moves on to the next channel.

Generally speaking, the level-based squelch system is faster than the noise-based squelch. Try it: LSQ

Another advantage of the level-based squelch is that when a noise source (as opposed to a desired signal) breaks the squelch, you can see the signal strength of the noise after it happened in SCP mode. This allows you to correctly set the squelch from breaking consequent to that noise source after the fact, something difficult or impossible to do well on conventional radios.

Although banks of memories could be added fairly easily, the nature of an SDR is that signal strength data comes in fairly late; this makes it difficult to stop on squelch breaks at high speeds. That, in turn, makes it troublesome to have lots of channels — scan too large a group at too slow a speed and you'll miss transmissions.

Instead, use LK and SK to load and save sets of memories that best suit you at the moment. Or just set up a few. Perhaps this will be revisited later, but for now, this is the way it works.
