That flame is about ten feet high (the burning portion... the top reaches about 20 feet into the air.) It burns night and day. Pretty, eh? Well. That represents an enormous waste of energy. For instance, it could be heating water or generating power. Instead, it's heating the air to no particular purpose. Not to mention that at night, it's part of a massive light pollution problem. This particular oil field is far enough from us (about 150 miles) that our skies remain dark here in the region of Montana I live in, but the North Dakota night skies are now as bleary and opaque as those of the densest east coast metropolitan area. This shot was exposed for the flame in broad daylight. That's how bright it is: It made sunlight look dim. ☹️ EXIF:
