Aurora — No Meteors
It was thought that this evening, on the event of the earth's first time passing through comet 209/P LINEAR's tail, that we might get an actual meteor "storm." Alas, it was not to be. Deb and I sat out there for half an hour staring right at the storm's predicted centroid, with decent viewing conditions, and... nothing. I did, however, catch this auroral ray zipping its way south out of Canada. At that moment, I'm almost certain I heard a whisper in the sky, something about lumberjacks being ok... I strapped my 50mm ƒ/1.4 lens on for this one, as it distorts a little bit less than my 24mm ƒ/1.4 lens. These are terrible lenses when it comes to trying to shoot high contrast things like stars. Sigh. Someday, someday, Canon might come up with a lens that doesn't have metric poop-tons of color and topological distortion in this kind of regime. Oh, please. As is my habit, I uploaded the full resolution image, but I don't recommend looking at it. The distortion of the stars everywhere but at the center of the shot is quite painful to view. EXIF:
