Ship Diorama
What I'm trying to do is create a situation where I can photograph 1:1250 models and have them look like they are at sea. This is a first attempt. My sweetheart, Deb, was kind enough to use stained glass techniques to create a wavelike surface that is reasonably to scale. We used a 1' square ¼th inch glass plate for the work (I hope to go for 2' x 2' for the final effort), and I cut and routed some scrap wood I had lying around for the case that holds the glass, which is about 4" high. The inside of the case is painted white, and the interior base is also painted white. This creates a situation where there is a fair amount of ambient light wandering around underneath the models. Overall, I like the result; the reflections of the ships look reasonable, and I think the application of a little sugar or salt to create "wakes" would probably work out, or if not, some other, perhaps finer-grained powder (powdered sugar?) Other ideas include using a light sand in the base, along with some small rocks. I think they'd show a little bit. EXIF:
