Tanker Outbound
Tanker: (Albatros Civil AL 213) I tried a few new things here in WinImages. Not all were 100% successful, but again, I learned some useful tidbits. The main thing I was attempting to do was rotate the wave interference beneath the ship to get the wake collinear with the ship's progress; that worked, but the height of the waves against the ship's hull needs to change as well, so a little more trickery is called for there — may be as simple as cutting away at the ship's alpha mask in a sinusoidal fashion. The smoke came out better, or at least, it came out more like I had intended because I dropped the center transparency of the regions that combine to make it up; as I thought, 100% solid is no good for such an effect. I changed the angle of the photograph, and I also played with the levels a little bit to get that "deep-sea" color. Overall, I like the result less than the President shot; but if I had applied what I did here to that one, it would have been a lot better, too, so worth it in every sense. Also — It'll definitely be a lot easier with a 2' x 2' diorama base — as it is, I have to work right next to the frame, and then clip that out. Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 100 mm ƒ/2.8 macro USM prime @ ƒ/20, ISO 800, 1/2 sec exposure, tripod, available light, 10s trigger holdoff to reduce shake.
