Royal George, inbound
Ok, here's a third ship (Navis NA 900S) in the diorama, and a third angle. The direction the light comes from makes a huge difference in how the surface appears, both in general color and with regard to the reflections from the waves. I didn't go for any of the geometric work on the water here, it is strictly powder for foam and a little brushwork to arrange it. I prefer the geometrics (but as I remarked earlier, those need to address height-on-hull issues.) The smoke went fine, at least I got the effect I was looking for — someone else might surely do it differently. I've seen some "smoke" in other diorama work that was made using cotton and other similar materials, but that isn't nearly as effective for the particular aesthetic I have in mind. Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 100 mm ƒ/2.8 macro USM prime @ ƒ/20, 2/5ths sec exposure, ISO 800, tripod, 10 sec delayed fire to reduce tripod shake, available light.
