Seagull at about 150 feet. It is flying towards a storm cloud, which is what makes up the backdrop. They come to this region because of Fort Peck lake; they hang around Glasgow, 15 miles or so from the lake, because cadging french fries from McDonald's customers is easier than picking scraps and small prey from the lake and shoreline. I shot this right off my front porch. Canon EOS 40D, Sigma 600 mm ƒ/8.0 (fixed) MF catadioptric mirror prime, ISO 200, ƒ/8 (fixed), 1/1600th sec shutter, handheld, MF, AE (the Sigma doesn't tell the camera anything about the f-stop, so you have to let the camera pick the shutter speed or else go with full manual.)
