Entryway — Floor and Walls

Well, we finally got to the entryway project. Deb decided upon a Victorian theme. The wallpaper is a textured curve abstract with a contrasting border above the chair rail in the same texture style. She cut, routed and stained the trim from pine stock (there's a little more to do in the far corners at the time of this photo), and tiled the floor. The ceiling will be white; it isn't closed yet because I have a couple more cabling projects that need to get through this space (primarily security camera feeds.) I wanted to shoot the space now because there's no furniture in it; looks interesting this way. I'll shoot it again when it's all done.

The doors were a lucky find at a local home project center, someone else ordered them and never picked them up. We grabbed 'em, installed and finished them, and Deb did the pretty appliqus. We're looking for a crystal doorknob for the door, but so far haven't found anything along the theme of what we're looking for. I've actually seen them in houses, so I know they exist, or existed... so I think it's just a matter of time.

At the top right, you can see some cables; those are 75-ohm FM feeds that route my in-house FM transmitter to the various stereo and surround systems. This allows us to distribute either the output of a CD changer or Sirius/XM to all the systems at once, providing a unified audio feed everywhere in the house. That way, when you walk from room to room, you can continue to hang with your favorite tunes.

At the top left, in the ceiling, you can see some wiring and a support plate. That's an inset space for the bathroom where its sound system, a Marantz 2285B, resides above the sinks. There's a power outlet up there, and in-wall wiring that leads to a sub and surround pair in the bathroom. Almost every room in the house has its own stereo, or if not a stereo, a complete surround system with video. The spaces between the rafters are very handy to insert such a system without otherwise affecting the room's design; keeps them out of the way of accidents and small children, too.

The entryway itself will get a Marantz 2250B (visible currently sitting on the floor at the end of the entryway), a 1970's era receiver with decent power and exquisite sound. We'll hide a passive sub behind the couch and snuggle a couple of small Linneam surrounds into the shelving.

On the left we'll place a couch in a flowered motif and two end tables topped by Tiffany lamps. Above the couch will be a small collection of family photos from both of our families. All photos will be black and white, and will sport Victorian style frames.

On the right will be a series of middle-height (below the chair rail) shelves which will showcase Deb's extensive collection of Chinese ceramics. On top of each shelving unit, the taller pieces (she has multi-foot tall jars and figures) will fit without worry about shelf height. Keeping the shelves to middle-height will also prevent the shelving from looming over anyone on the couch.

Conversion from RAW to JPEG in Aperture.

For the photo, I lit the space with two small desk lamps in the near corners; that accounts for the burnout just inside the bottom of the door. Also, you'll notice some contrast artifacts; these result from pushing the highlights down and the definition up in order to reveal details in the image.
