Orion Nebula
Canon EOS 50D, Canon EF 100-400 mm ƒ/4.5-5.6L IS USM zoom @ 400 mm, ISO 12,800, 1 sec. exposure per frame, ƒ/5.6, tripod, 2-sec shutter holdoff, 35 frames. RAW conversion in Aperture, stacking and processing in WinImages. The shot on the left is the 1:1 stacked result pushed a little bit with levels; top right is the entire 15 megapixel image stack/clip result w/o any processing (other than stacking), bottom right is one frame at ISO 12,800, complete with plenty of noise. 😊 Now, you should be aware that I didn't even try for accurate focus, as I was primarily interested in how well the 50D's noise at 12,800 would come out with stacking; I am quite sure I can do better than this. I simply set the lens to the infinity mark and let fly! Also, the full moon was about 1/4 of the sky away, and it was humid — so this is very much the minimum one might expect. What is cool about this is that I used an ƒ/5.6 lens with exposures of one second on a fixed tripod, no extra gear, and it worked out very well. I'm going to have a blast with this camera this winter when the sky is free of humidity and the moon isn't around to foul everything up. Imagine using an ƒ/5.6 lens to shoot a magnitude 4 deep sky object. Still blows my mind!
