Yaesu FT-980, SP-980

This is Yaesu's FT-980, a near top of the line transceiver from the late 1970's. It's had a hard life. I was out one evening in the 1980's, and one of my cats went to sleep on my CW (morse code) key, putting the radio into transmit and leaving it there long enough to burn out the power amplifier in the output section. This is a module, and I ordered one from Yaesu, but it never arrived; so I asked, and they told me "out of stock" (by which they apparently meant, "out of luck.") So I ordered the transistors that were bad instead; no, they never showed up either. So this fine transceiver was doomed to be a receiver for most of its life.

To this day, it outperforms any other receiver I own, and not only that, it sounds better than any other receiver I own. Someday, I hope to find an FT-980 that has some other kind of problem - like, it won't receive - and be able to swap in a new set of output hardware for it. until then, it lives in my ham shack as my "easy listening" receiver.

Any SW or AM station I don't need DSP for, this is what I use to listen with. It's got a good analog notch, great for single heterodyne interference. The RF attenuator shaft broke one day when it was being moved, not a huge problem, I set it to zero and forgot about it. The only other issue is the bulb in the S-meter is shot... I haven't quite had the heart to go in there and switch to LEDs yet, but maybe someday I will.
