Desktop of Doom

Here's my workspace. Basically, you're looking at a 3 GHz, 8-core Mac Pro with six monitors treated as one large desktop. The two topmost monitors are on pedestals I built out of wood; both the monitors and the pedestals are screwed down, so as not to fall in my face. The other four are securely sitting on the desk. The Mac Pro itself is behind the monitor with the photo of the aurora on it, sitting sideways. I rarely touch it, physically. Maybe once every couple of months or so. The whole thing runs on a huge UPS so that power fluctuations and losses are never an issue.

This arrangement sort of came about organically... every time I bought a new video card, I'd re-arrange the monitors, and usually one or two other items. I want to go to 8 monitors (having come to the conclusion that I can never have too much working area) but really can't pull it off with this desk.

So I've also been putting off rebuilding the office, as the idea of digging the mac, the three servers, six monitors, 30 or so ethernet cables, the switch, firewall and associated ancillary scanners, video digitizer, the mixer, security cabling and monitors and my guitar gear out and stuffing it all into the hall while I build the appropriate desk and shelving just makes me close my eyes and sigh... it'll probably take a couple days to do, start to finish, and I'm strongly resisting that big a break in my schedule.

The idea is to add another pair of monitors for a total of eight, mount them on swinging shelves so I can "wrap" them around me at my preferred viewing angle and distance, with the audio likewise floating in the air on extension arms and aimed, of course, at my ears.

But good grief it's a big job. Hence, the mildly claustrophobic arrangement you see here, and my continuing procrastination.

I shot this at ƒ/22 in order to get DOF for the whole mess; probably a bit of overkill, and that in turn bought me a whole bunch of diffraction blur, but this shot is sort of just a historical note, not exactly a portrait, lol. It'll be a worthy footnote when I finally get around to building the new office configuration.
