Animated Diamond Ray Trace
This was made with a ray tracer I wrote. Basically, I set up the model of the gem, and then spun it the number of degrees that equate to exactly one facet's "pie slice" of the entire gem. Since all the facets are the same, as this repeats, it provides a perfect illusion of the gem spinning 360 degrees, but it only consumes a fraction of the bandwidth of a "true" full spin. Another thing that helps the illusion is that you tend to run your eye over different parts of the image at different points in time, and so you really do see something different, even though technically speaking, it's all repeating every few seconds. The ray tracer does all sorts of cool things; it can generate complex textures including clouds, tornados, waves, sand and so on. It also does metals correctly, which most ray tracers do not.
