ICOM IC271H VHF (2M) Transceiver
Icom's IC271H. This is a moderately high-powered VHF transceiver with features designed to allow compensation for satellite doppler shift (as a satellite approaches, frequencies move up, and as it recedes, frequencies move down.) I've used this to receive SSTV video from the space shuttle, among other things. Here, it is tuned to the local (20 miles away) repeater out at Fort Peck lake. I use an AEA Isopole at about 20 feet for this, which provides excellent at-the-horizon orientation for solid connections. I've had the radio since they were released, but honestly, I don't recall how long it's been. 20 years, perhaps? It gave me a little trouble with a T/R relay once, but it was both easy to find and easy to repair. As an older VHF set, the features aren't as well thought out as a more modern one, but it's more than sufficient to work 2 meters any way I choose, so it'll stay in the shack until it breaks down and I can't fix it, or the FCC does something (else) stupid to the band allocations. As this is both high power and 12 VDC only, it is the main reason I have a 40-amp 12 VDC supply in the radio room. 😊 If you're in the area, feel free to give a shout on the area repeater. It's 146.840, down 600 kHz input, 100 hz tone gate. Just call QRZ and if I'm around, I'll answer. EXIF:
