After my School's First Tournement
Here in Montana, you have to travel quite a bit to get to a tournament. This first one for our school, back in the 1990's, required a 300 mile trip — one way. Everyone who went, however, brought back a medal, everyone got at least one first place competing against students of a very highly ranked master, Billings master Park, as scored by master Park and his black belts, and for that reason, this is one of my favorite photographs. That's me in front; my students here range from red belt (just below black) to yellow (early beginner.) Our school concentrates on three martial arts, Tae kwon do for linear striking, Chin na for joint locking and control, and both Hap ki do and Ju do for grappling and throwing. As far as tournaments go, we compete in forms (hyung, poomse, kata) and sparring, generally in WTF or open events, as we are non-affiliated. Our school descends from master Lim, Sang Woong, of Ji do kwan and Tang soo do lineage. For those of you who are interested in patterns, we learn 31 in the below-dan ranks; 3 Ki cho, 3 Tae kuek, 8 Pal gae, 8 Tae guk, 5 Pyung an, 3 Chel gi (a.k.a. Na hi an chi), and Bat sai i cho. At black belt and beyond, we combine a line of TKD patterns (Koreo, Keum gang, etc.) with Okinowan/Japanese patterns (Bat sai i dai, Ship su/tek ki, etc.) 사범님 벤 跆拳道 五段
