Power Controller System
The two SS-50 boards here are a video and interface board (top board) and a 6809 CPU and interface board. This system was designed to help industrial plants to reduce peak power usage by (a) measuring power consumption at the meter and (b) cycling various loads on and off to reduce the peak demand, as that was what the energy supplier (FP&L, "Florida Power and Light", or as well all knew them, "Florida Plunder and Loot) were using to set the electrical billing level for the operation. I designed both boards, and laid out both PCBs (manually, on a light table.) The ones in the image are fully functional prototypes. A shot of one of the operating software's screens is here. A (mildly) interesting feature of this design was that I designed it with RF output that could be tuned to a television channel. This made the output very easy to send long distances over coaxial cable to a standard television, so that monitoring the system could be done at a considerable distance from the actual hardware, and also multiple monitors in multiple locations could be used with a simple RF splitter. #6809 #design #hardware #florida #powercontroller #pcb #ss50 #notes
